Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life

( WWB FALL BOOK WISE PICK 2017 —Read Q&A with Author Here)

“Only staying active will make you want to live a hundred years.” —Japanese proverb

AMAZON OVERVIEW: According to the Japanese, everyone has an ikigai—a reason for living. And according to the residents of the Japanese village with the world’s longest-living people, finding it is the key to a happier and longer life. Having a strong sense of ikigai—the place where passion, mission, vocation, and profession intersect—means that each day is infused with meaning. It’s the reason we get up in the morning. It’s also the reason many Japanese never really retire (in fact there’s no word in Japanese that means retirein the sense it does in English): They remain active and work at what they enjoy, because they’ve found a real purpose in life—the happiness of always being busy.

WWB Ideal Finds: What’s in the Box? How to be Wise Selecting a Subscription Beauty Box & WWB’s Ideal Find…

May 2, 2017 by

WWBBeautyBox2017

Beauty connoisseurs may already be familiar with subscription sample boxes but for  many of my wellness focused readers, it may be something new.  Simply described, sample subscription boxes are a great way to try new products. The beauty category is filled with options to subscribe to.  Since I am not your typical beauty blogger I thought I would share a quick excerpt from ConsumersAffairs here, and if you’re really interested you can review some of the beauty boxes that receive high ratings at their site. What I appreciate about the guide by Consumer Affairs is they do an excellent job educating you on how to select the right subscription box. Of course as I always encourage, the first question to ask is ‘What are my values and how does it effect my health, animals and the planet?”.  I highlighted the criteria I would consider first in green below. It is a lot to think about but why not aim for an A+ Life! One of my WWB icons wrote a book called ‘Little Changes’ and it’s an excellent book that will help you become savvy about personal care products, home cleaning products and ingredients.

What I’m passionate about at World Wise Beauty is focusing on wellness culture–wellness for us as individuals and wellness for the beautiful planet we live on. Below are the savvy tips from Consumer Affairs, and just beneath that is my ‘Ideal Find’ for the subscription sample box category. My choice is focused on conscious beauty and personal wellness which satisfies my values criteria. I hope you get to know this company, as they are well established, and very committed to curating the best in green and conscious beauty. What I also like is they are seasonal and you won’t be overwhelmed every month with product. After reading the savvy tips, scroll down for WWB’s Ideal Find!

WHAT FEATURES MATTER MOST?

Excerpt from Consumer Affairs

Price

When ordering a beauty box subscription, consider the total cost of each box. Perhaps start with a subscription without a long-term commitment to see if you find the box to be a good value.

  • Per box: Most subscription boxes are available on a month-by-month basis with no commitment. However, subscriptions are typically billed and shipped automatically until you cancel them.
  • Annual savings: Some companies offer a discount if subscribers commit to a multi-month subscription with the largest savings available to those who sign up and prepay for a year’s worth of boxes.
  • Promos: Some companies offer discounts for new customers. Search for a promo code before making your purchase.
  • Shipping: Make sure the shipping is included in the subscription fee, or factor the shipping fee into the total cost of the box.

Samples

Although most companies do not reveal what products will be included in future boxes, their websites should give you a sense of the types and number of products you can expect. Look at their previous boxes to see if they usually include products you’d like to try.

  • Size: Beauty boxes may include trial-size or full-size products. Unless the website specifically states that all products in their boxes are full size, assume that the majority will be in trial sizes.
  • Quantity: Consider how many products come in each box. Check to see if the website lists the number of samples or the minimum manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of the items included. A box with a minimum total MSRP might offer more consistent value.
  • Brands: Look at the beauty box websites to see if partner brands are listed, so you’ll know whether you’ll likely get prestige or drugstore brands. If a box includes both, you can also look at past boxes to see the ratio of prestige to drugstore brands.

Gifts

Beauty boxes and beauty box subscriptions make excellent gifts for makeup lovers, selective consumers and discerning loved ones. Most companies make it easy to send their product as a gift.

  • Subscriptions: Some companies allow you to set up the subscription so the recipient’s first box simply arrives in the mail.
  • Gift cards: Some companies offer gift cards. Once the recipient has received the card, she or he can order the box online.

Product ingredients

If you have sensitive skin or have ethical concerns about the beauty products you purchase, determine whether the ingredients in the products included in each box will meet your needs and standards.

  • Cruelty-free: If you avoid products that have been tested on animals or that contain any animal by-products, look for boxes that include only cruelty-free products.
  • Natural: Those with sensitive skin or who worry about chemicals in their beauty products and cosmetics should look for boxes with hypoallergenic or organic products.
  • Labeled: Regardless of your preferences about ingredients, make sure you will be able to view a full ingredient list for every item in each box. Products should be labeled clearly in case you have questions or concerns.

Tutorials

Because beauty boxes are designed to help you discover new products and brands, look for ones with tutorials so you can learn how to use all the items in the box.

  • In box: Most boxes contain written instructions and photos in each subscription box.
  • Online: Some companies offer video tutorials online, so you can watch a professional use the product.
  • In store: Companies that also have retail locations may offer free in-store tutorials.

Customization

Because your skin is unique, you want to know the products you receive will work for you. Look at whether a company customizes its subscription boxes to match consumers’ tastes and needs.

  • No customization: Some boxes are not customized based on your preferences. These boxes typically include products that work for a wide number of people and a variety of skin types.
  • Limited customization: The majority of boxes are somewhat customized for different consumers. For these boxes, you usually need to fill out a profile detailing your skin needs, beauty concerns and preferences. Boxes may be customized further after you begin to review products included in your boxes.
  • Full customization: A few companies allow customers to choose all of the products included in their box. These usually include fewer samples and may be more expensive.

WWB’s ‘BOOK WISE’ Gift Ideas Inspiration + Wisdom + Tools for a Healthy and Fulfilling New Year…

Dec 2, 2016 by

wwbbookwisegifts2016

Whether you are thinking about how to improve your overall wellness lifestyle, or you want to encourage a loved one to value their health and well-being, WWB’s ‘Book Wise’ gift ideas are sure to assist you in the mission! My criteria for the ‘ideal book gift’ is three simple things.

Inspiration  + Wisdom  + Tools

Cherry picked especially for you, the following books are from culturally relevant experts in wellness culture and all meet my criteria. They are what I have coined, a WWB Worthwhile Read. Worth your curiosity, worth your time and worth your investment. Most importantly, all the books encourage you to take ownership of your own well-being, and explore best practices for your unique bio-individuality and lifestyle. This matters greatly , because nobody can live your life as well as you!

I encourage you to explore wellness culture, glean wisdom and find tools to design a life of wellness that feels right and works for you. Click on the books below and it will take you to Amazon with full overview of the book. Many of the authors have joined me here for Q&A’s and I provided the links if you are interested in learning more about the authors. Finally, look out a special social event called the A+ Life produced by ‘Rise of Wise’ events, where you can meet and mingle with wellness visionaries, socialize with like minded friends, and find inspiration, wisdom and tools! The event details will be announced early 2017.  Follow this blog to automatically be put on the invitation list!

Hope you give the gift of wellness inspiration this year!  Share the wisdom and be a positive influence on someone’s life.  Or maybe it’s time to take good care of yourself?  Rather than creating a resolutions list this year, why not make a promise to yourself to make your health, happiness and well-being your top priority. Once you make that decision, you can begin to design a lifestyle that supports your priorities. You will never feel more clarity and peace, once you make up your mind. Inspiration, wisdom and tools are out there and I’m here to help you find them! Have a joyous holiday season and a healthy fulfilling New Year…

A World of Thanks: A Special Thanksgiving Tribute to the Passioneers In the Business of Compassion…

Nov 23, 2016 by

wwbthanks

look

It is Thanksgiving week and it is a time to think about what you are grateful for. I wanted to take this opportunity to thank some special organizations who are helping the truly helpless–animals. For them I am deeply grateful. I love the opening quote from Mr. Rogers which are words from his mother he found comforting and reassuring. She essentially said “When things are scary, look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”

For me, there is something very special about people dedicating their lives to saving and rescuing animals. The fact that there are so many new animal sanctuaries launching around the country tells you that goodness is rising.  More importantly, compassion and empathy are rising. If we can have empathy for another species different from us (yet most are sentient beings just like us) we are on our way to a more evolved and kind world.

I follow a few of these special animal sanctuaries on social channels like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, and I thought I would encourage you to do the same. You will find links below…

Please have a look–what is the worst thing that could happen? You end up giving up turkey on Thanksgiving?  Once you begin to follow, you will see farm animals as the real sentient beings they are, and your heart may break open. It will hurt at first, because you will now be aware of the great suffering the animals have endured before they were rescued. After you allow yourself to feel, you will become elated. Yes elated– because you will realize there are wonderful passioneers dedicating their lives to helping these helpless animals and also creating safe sanctuaries for them.  After the elation, you then will feel pure joy, because you will discover that these animals are not only forgiving of humans but truly show great love and affection for their caretakers who rescued them. All of this will remind you that OUR SPECIES, can be incredibly kind, good and compassionate, and the animals we share this beautiful planet with are equally awesome.

So when things look scary in the world, look for the helpers and take a look at these sanctuary organizations. Then look into these animals eyes, and you will soon feel heartened that goodness and kindness is all around you. I’m not here to tell you to not eat the turkey, only you can make that value driven decision.  But I am here to remind you, that there are truly wonderful compassionate people out there, saving turkeys, pigs, horses, cows, goats, and yes, cats and dogs. One animal at a time, they make up for all the ugliness in the world, and remind us of our better human nature. For this I am truly grateful, and I extend a world of thanks to these special people on behalf of my fellow humans. Have a look and follow their social pages. I promise all that anxiety you worked up in 2016 will melt away and the animals will capture your very fine compassionate human heart.  Wait until you learn how the planet, your environment, and your health benefits from protecting farm animals. The news just gets better and better…

P.S. A special honorable mention to my favorite cartoonist  Patrick McDonnel  ( a fellow NJ citizen) creator of ‘Mutts’ and a tireless champion for all animals, not just cats and dogs. We have grown to love Mooch and Earl, who are really wonderful ambassadors for the animal kingdom. His fun and inspiring work can be found here…http://www.mutts.com/meet-the-cast

Gentle Barn Sanctuary: Teaching People Kindness and Compassion to Animals, Each Other and our Planet.

The Gentle Barn rescues animals from severe abuse and neglect who are too old, sick, lame, or scared to be adopted into homes. We are sanctuary to horses, donkeys, cows, pigs, sheep, goats, turkeys, chickens, llamas, peacocks, emus, cats and dogs. Once rehabilitated, the animals help us give hope and inspiration to children with the same stories.

WOODSTOCK SANCTUARY

what_we_do_headline

Woodstock Farm Sanctuary is driven by the simple philosophy that kindness and respect to animals is our duty and that all the creatures that share this earth are here with us and not for us. Farm animals are feeling individuals who deserve to be treated with compassion.

We are a place where visitors can come face to face with the animals they may only know as dinner and learn about the devastating effects of modern-day agribusiness on the animals, the environment and human health. Here you can frolic with goats in a large open pasture, sit down with a pig who wants nothing more than a belly rub, cuddle with chickens who seek out your attention or get nuzzled by some very friendly sheep!

At the heart of our mission is the hands-on work of rescuing, rehabilitating and caring for farmed animal refugees — as well as educating the public about the typically horrific treatment of animals who are raised for food.

FARM SANCTUARY:

The Someone Project:
Farm Animal Behavior, Emotion, and Intelligence

fsgoat

“Farm animals feel pleasure and sadness, excitement and resentment, depression, fear, and pain. They are far more aware and intelligent than we ever imagined…they are individuals in their own right.” — Jane Goodall

Farm Sanctuary was founded in 1986 when Farm Sanctuary President and Co-Founder Gene Baur rescued Hilda from a stockyard dead pile. Since that time, we’ve met, loved, and provided refuge for thousands of animals. Many people see two classes of animals: The animals with whom we share our homes, and everyone else. But other animals are not different in any way that matters morally from the dogs and cats with whom so many of us share our lives. At Farm Sanctuary, we share our lives with farm animals — chickens, turkeys, pigs, goats, sheep, ducks, geese, and cattle. And we can tell you from personal experience that farm animals have the same range of personalities and interests as cats and dogs.

BARN SANCTUARY

We’re a hands-on animal sanctuary dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and caring for animal refugees. We educate the general public about the horrific treatment of animals raised for food, and the positive impact that a plant-based diet can have on the environment and our health.

What is a Farm Sanctuary?
A Farm Sanctuary is a place where animals who have been abused, neglected or abandoned in commercial farming institutions can live out their lives in a peaceful environment, where they are cherished and properly cared for. Animals in factory farms often collapse under the pressure of their failing health and agonizing living conditions. They do not receive medical attention because it is cheaper to let them slowly die. Those fortunate enough to enter a sanctuary can leave this nightmare behind. CFEI has unwavering gratitude towards these sanctuaries and the kind hearts that keep them operational and thriving. If you operate a sanctuary or know of one that is not listed here, please contact us to include yours in our directory. Thank you! Ever thought about starting a sactuary? Learn

WWB Holiday Ideal Find: The Perfect Thanksgiving Gift for the Hostess and Everyone on Your List!

Nov 17, 2015 by

WWB IDEAL FIND: White Orchid Ultrasonic Diffuser

So excited to share my Ideal Find and just in time for the holidays! This special home fragrance diffuser is the perfect gift for almost anyone on your list. It can be used in home or office environment and is a wonderful gift to bring as a gift when visiting friends and family. And if there was ever a rationalization to splurge on yourself  let it be for the sake of wellness!

WWB IDEAL FIND: White Orchid Ultrasonic Diffuser

Founder: Marcus Rowell ( partner is wife, currently due to give birth next week!)

Authentic Dedication: To help people create beautiful and healing spaces in their lives.

Lauroly Q- Welcome Marcus to World Wise Beauty. Let me get this out right away–I am thrilled to introduce your product ‘White Orchid Ultrasonic Diffuser’ as an ‘Ideal Find’ and I believe it is the perfect gift to give for the holidays! I think it’s a great gift to give to the host/hostess of holiday parties and Thanksgiving is next week!  I love aromatherapy and have featured some wonderful companies producing natural essential oils in this very department of World Wise Beauty. Your product is lovely, easy to use and most importantly safe to use. I was also impressed with your digital website ‘Perfect Mind Perfect Body’.  Many products are developing content and communities around their product lines, but your platform is earnest and very well done. Did you always have an interest in natural health and lifestyle? Share with us, what inspired your enlightening business venture?

Marcus Rowell and Wife

Marcus Rowell: Thank you Lauroly for the kind words. I am so happy you like the website and our White Orchid Diffuser. We are really excited about the feedback we’ve had so far. It’s been overwhelming positive. We are honored to be featured among the other amazing products you spotlight in “Ideal Finds.” I’ve always had a passion for natural health, but I would say my passion really intensified throughout the last 5 years.

One particular instance that really fired up my passion involved my elderly grandmother. I remember noticing her taking her daily regimen of medicine. I specifically remember being surprised at how many pills she was taking. There must have been 10 pills. Out of pure curiosity, I asked her what each pill was for. I remember her telling me some were for high cholesterol, diabetes, itching, trouble sleeping, and more. I went home that night and started to explore the side effects of each medication. What I found absolutely shocked me. Most of the medicines she was taking was actually for side effects of other medicines. The cholesterol medicine she was taking was causing her to itch. The itch medicine she was taking, gave her insomnia. The antidepressant she was taking to help her sleep, caused her to feel dizzy at times. The list went on and on. The cure was literally worse than the original illness. No one had taken the time to tell her that if you just lower your cholesterol everything else will go away. Instead, whenever she complained about an illness, she was just given a new and “better” medicine to take.

As I tried to tell my family about some natural foods that my grandmother should add/remove from her diet, I was met resistance…. “That won’t work, some illnesses you actually NEED medicine for when you get older.” This way of thinking is what inspired me to create Perfect Mind Perfect Body. I want to people to know that there are natural healthy alternatives. And they actually work! And they don’t have negative side effects!

The mission of Perfect Mind Perfect Body is to inspire people all around the world to stop settling for a life dictated by pain and illness and to go out and live their healthiest life. Essential oils are a part of that natural alternative. I use them daily. The White Orchid came about because I needed a way to diffuse these oils, but I could never find one that was elegant enough to put in my living room. While there are many ultrasonic diffusers on the market, I found that it was nearly impossible to find one that was functional AND sophisticated. That’s the great thing about the White Orchid. It actually accentuates the room, without compromising the purpose of diffusing the essential oils.

Lauroly Q- What a hard awakening to discover your grandmother had been lead down the wrong path when it came to her healing.  Sometimes wisdom comes from watching other people struggle,  but your family is lucky to have you as a great model. The bright side is, the lessons learned has motivated you to share wellness wisdom with everyone. I can relate to your mission! Now let’s get to the technical part of White Orchid. What is an ultrasonic diffuser? Please explain for those who are unfamiliar with the term and tell us how it works.

Marcus Rowell: Great Question! There different ways to diffuse essential oils into the air. The most popular either involve heat or cold water. Using heat is not really advised because it can alter the chemistry of the essential oil, which can remove the therapeutic effect of the oil. Not to get too technical, but an ultrasonic diffuser is filled with cold water. A few drops of the essential oil is added to the water. A frequency vibrates through the water into the air. The vibration disperses the oil into the air. The oil is never heated so the oil chemistry is preserved. It may sound complicated, but all you have to do is add water, add a few drops of oil and enjoy.

Lauroly Q- As I shared, I was really impressed with your website which you created as an open forum for health & wellness enthusiasts. One of the most interesting articles was posted by you, entitled ‘6 Essential Oils That Increase Creativity and How to Use Them’. This of course makes me think ‘White Orchid’ could also be the perfect ‘Kris Kringle’ office gift or for anyone working in an office environment. What essential oils increase creativity?

Marcus Rowell: No matter what we do, we all can use some creativity at times. Whether it’s at work, during a hobby or when you are creating something. We all have the ability to be creative, but sometimes the stresses of our life can cloud our mind and make this process difficult. Eucalyptus will help to rejuvenate the mind. If you have the blues, patchouli is really good. If you can settle those racing thoughts in your mind, try cypress. That’s just to name a few. It’s a great gift for the office or home. I diffuse these oils and others everyday.

Lauroly Q- What other things does aromatherapy help with that we may not know? I should note here, what I also like about White Lotus Ultrasonic Diffuser is you can use your own essential oils, which means you be selective about the quality of the oils. May I suggest one of WWB’s essential oil ‘Ideal Finds  ‘Golden Earth’.  Love the line and their focus on wellness, wisdom and harmony!

Marcus Rowell: Haha…How much time do you have? I use essential oils for everything. If you get motion sickness, ginger oil works well to get rid of the queasy feeling. I take with me in the car or on airplanes. When I need to freshen my home, I diffuse Eucalyptus Lemon. Not only will completely neutralize a bad odor, but it will freshen the room as well.

After a long day when I want to relax, I diffuse lavender to destress. I’m normally a light sleeper, so it really helps me get deeper sleep. When I want to set a romantic mood, I diffuse Balsam of Peru essential oil. It has a vanilla like smell with a touch of cinnamon. I could go on and on.

Lauroly Closing: Well if there is anything we are happy to go on about, it is certainly healing aromatherapy! Thank you for visiting World Wise Beauty Marcus. Weekly Wisdom Wrap: Girls Just Want to Have Sun… Everything You Need to Know About Sun-Bathing & Protection

Jul 31, 2015 by

Girls just want to have sun but what’s a gal to do, when so many warnings are coming at us regarding the dangers of sun. Not only do we hear about the dangers of the sun itself, but we also hear about the dangers of the chemicals in our sun-protection products. Sigh! To top this off, we also hear how important it is for our bodies to absorb Vitamin D and it is best absorbed via the sun-rays.

Let’s start with Vitamin D. Here is a fantastic infographic that illustrates everything you need to know about Vitamin D. Once you review, you’ll understand why we need to have some fun in the sun! As you can see from the chart, you can take supplements and you can get Vitamin D from some food sources. This may be something to consider because getting your Vitamin D from the sun depends on where you live, the color of your skin, and how much exposure you get everyday.

We are all different, and this is why you always have to consider your unique body and lifestyle when reviewing health data. Believe it or not, researchers say we only need 20 minutes of good sunshine to get our Vitamin D but this isn’t always easy to do year round for many of us. Continue on for more wellness wisdom on how you can have your sun in just the right doses, and protect yourself safely…

Don’t you just love the mannequin model named ‘Celeste’ by the way! A friend of mine has created this wonderful series of mannequins. What I love about ‘Celeste’ is she looks so sophisticated in her hat and shades! Notice how fair-skinned she is, which is all the more reason she needs to cover up. Especially if she is spending significant time in the sun. This is the key factor to remember. 20 Minutes in the sun is great for absorbing your Vitamin D, but after that you have to protect your skin through covering up and using SPF skin-care products. Below are recommendations excerpted from the Mayo Clinic on Sunburn protection and if you develop these healthy sun bathing habits, you will reap the benefit of younger looking skin. Most dermatologists will tell you it is sun-damage to the skin that ages you quickly, especially if you have sensitive skin to begin with. Just as a reminder for the darker World Wise Beauties, you have to worry about sun-damage and cancer just as much. You just have slightly different guidelines. See below for the general tips…

Excerpt from the Mayo Clinic:

Use these methods to prevent sunburn, even on cool, cloudy or hazy days. And be extra careful around water, snow, ice and sand because they reflect the sun’s rays. In addition, UV light is more intense at high altitudes.

  • Avoid sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The sun’s rays are strongest during these hours, so try to schedule outdoor activities for other times. If you’re unable to do that, limit the length of time you’re in the sun. Seek shade when possible.
  • Cover up. Wear tightly woven clothing that covers you, including your arms and legs. Consider wearing clothing or outdoor gear specially designed to provide sun protection. Check the label for its ultraviolet protection factor (UPF), which indicates how effectively a fabric blocks damaging sunlight. The higher the number, the better. Dark colors offer more protection, as do fabrics treated with UV- absorbing chemicals. Also wear a broad-brimmed hat, which protects you better than a baseball cap or golf visor does.
  • Use sunscreen frequently and generously. No matter what your skin type is, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or greater. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or greater.Apply sunscreen generously, and reapply it every two hours — or more often if you’re swimming or perspiring. If you’re also using insect repellent, apply the sunscreen first. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not recommend products that combine an insect repellent with a sunscreen. You may use sunscreen on toddlers and babies 6 months or older. But for younger babies, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends using other forms of sun protection, such as shade or clothing.
  • Wear sunglasses when outdoors. You offer your eyes the best protection outdoors by choosing the highest UV protection-rated sunglasses. Darker lenses are not necessarily better at blocking UV rays. Check the UV rating on the label when buying new glasses. It also helps to wear sunglasses that fit close to your face and have wraparound frames that block sunlight from all angles.
  • Don’t expect a base tan to protect. Some people think getting a base tan prevents sunburn. The idea is that a few sessions of indoor tanning will protect them from burning in the sun. Research doesn’t support this. A base tan is no substitute for good sun protection. Plus, the risks of long-term tanning outweigh the unproven benefits of a base tan.
I want to share the following page from the Skin Cancer Foundation, because they offer a very comprehensive overview on all the concerns about SPF products and it helps you understand the ‘lingo’ when looking for sun-care products. In the meantime here is an excerpt from their site on the new sunscreen guidelines developed by the FDA.

FDA Sunscreen Labeling Guidelines at a Glance

  • Sunscreens may be labeled “broad-spectrum” if they provide protection against both UVA and UVB radiation according to FDA-sanctioned test methods.
  • Only broad-spectrum sunscreens with an SPF of 15 or higher may state that they help protect against skin cancer and early skin aging if used as directed with other sun protection measures.
  • Broad-spectrum sunscreens with SPFs of 2-14 must display a warning that the product has not been shown to help prevent skin cancer or early skin aging.
  • The terms “sunblock,” “sweatproof” and “waterproof” are no longer allowed on sunscreen labels.
  • Sunscreens may claim to be “water-resistant,” but must specify whether they protect the skin for 40 or 80 minutes of swimming or sweating, based on standard testing. Sunscreens that are not water-resistant must instruct consumers to use a water-resistant sunscreen if swimming or sweating.
  • A company cannot claim that its sunscreen products provide sun protection for more than two hours without submitting test results to prove this.
  • The FDA has proposed a regulation that would require sunscreen products with SPF values higher than 50 to be labeled “SPF 50+.” The FDA is seeking additional data before making a final ruling. Learn more about high-SPF sunscreens.
  • The FDA is currently reviewing the effectiveness of sunscreen wipes, powders, towelettes, as well as body washes and shampoo with sunscreen ingredients. No decisions have been made.
  • For sunscreen spray products, the agency has requested additional data to establish effectiveness and to determine whether they present a safety concern if inhaled unintentionally.*

*The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends applying spray sunscreen in a well-ventilated room, or outdoors (keeping in mind that the wind may carry some sunscreen away). Keep your eyes and mouth closed when spraying sunscreen. When applying to the face, it’s best to spray the sunscreen on your hand and then apply to your face by hand.

But wait, what about all those nasty reports about the chemicals in SPF’s?  I like to get the full story on everything and personally prefer using the least amount of chemicals as possible when I can. Having said this, I think it is important that you get a full and balanced report on sunscreen. The Skin Cancer Foundation wrote the following response to the EWG ( Environmental Working Group) after their scorching sunscreen report was released in 2014.
The EWG’s conclusions about various brands are based on product label information, which is analyzed by people who are not experts in the field. The EWG’s Sunscreen Report uses scare tactics that only serve to confuse the public and potentially deter them from using the quality sunscreen products that are readily accessible. Though using sunscreen is a vital sun safety strategy, The Skin Cancer Foundation has always recommended a complete sun protection regimen that includes not only sunscreen use, but also seeking shade, covering up with clothing including a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.
So you have to consider the science, but also consider who is backing the research. Sorry to say, but this is the world we are living in. I think the Skin Cancer Foundation wants to protect us and I would like to believe they do their research. Having said this, I personally might try some of the sunscreens that use minerals vs chemicals or at the very least harm-free chemicals. Here are the well-respected groups that will give you their research on dangerous chemicals, and recommend products who use minerals and safe ingredients.
Ultimately you have to make a decision for yourself. Be your own guru but get ALL the information available and then choose wisely. The bottom line is we need to have a little fun in the sun for our health and our spirits! And we definitely need our Vitamin D!  Just be wise, practice safe sun-bathing and do your research when using ANY personal care products you slather all over your skin! Happy Summer World Wise Beauty!
