It’s New Year’s Eve, and baby it’s cold outside here on the East Coast of the United States! It seems like the perfect day to recommend 4 wise books that will be sure to warm you from the inside out and inspire your New Year. Here are a few points of interest about the books selected for you.

  • Three of the books have been selected as World Wise Beauty ‘Book Wise’ Picks in 2017 and you can find links to the Q&A with Authors below.
  • One of the books ‘The Little Book Of ‘Lykke’ was just released this week and the author also wrote the International Best Seller ‘The Little Book of Hygge’. Don’t know these fun Danish terms? Learn more via my book highlights below…
  • All of the books focus on wellness lifestyle and culture and inspire us to cultivate a healthy positive mindset while providing us with real tips on adopting their approach to happiness, personal fulfillment and well-being.
  • One of the books is about a Japanese approach to longevity and happiness. The authors are not natives of Japan but one of them has lived there for over 10 years and has really embraced the ‘Ikigai’ mindset. We can too!

The title of the book Ikigai is a Japanese word whose meaning translates roughly to a reason for being, encompassing joy, a sense of purpose and meaning and a feeling of well-being.  Recently the book was selected as WWB’s Fall Book Wise pick. You can find the Q&A with author of the book here and learn more how he has embraced the ‘Ikigai’ mindset living in Japan.

WWB’s Fav Section: Finding Flow in Everything You Do–How to turn work and free time into spaces for growth. In a world that has us crazy with multi-tasking, we can learn a lot about focus and becoming completely absorbed with one task. Don’t you love that wonderful feeling when you have lost track of time and you are completely committed to where you are and what you are doing. Let’s go with the flow in 2018…

The title of this book Lagom, is a Swedish word meaning “just the right amount”. The Lexin Swedish-English dictionary defines lagom as “enough, sufficient, adequate, just right”. Lagom is also widely translated as “in moderation”, “in balance”, “perfect-simple”, and “suitable” (in matter of amounts). I think this mindset maybe the most challenging for Americans as we tend to strive for ‘more’ and this is strongly embedded in our psyche! With the environmental crisis we are facing world wide, hopefully we will embrace a Lagom state of mind sooner than later. What if enough was enough? Good questions to ponder in the New Year. Of note there are several books with LAgom in the title, but this particular book I found to be the most insightful and grounded. The author is not Swedish but she’s a travel writer and photographer, and enjoys exploring various cultures through food, tradition, and lifestyle. Of note, she’s an award-winning writer, speaker, and photographer represented by National Geographic Creative. You can find her award winning photographs throughout the book! WWB Fav Section: Nature and Sustainability! We Americans could use MORE of this wisdom! Don’t you think? What I love about the Swedish approach to home and living is the art of bringing nature indoors but also their appreciation for nature all around them. The Swedish interdependent mindset’ is one we can all aspire to.

The title of this book is based on a Danish word ‘Hygge’ meaning a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being (regarded as a defining characteristic of Danish culture). I like how the author simply says it’s ‘cocoa by candlelight.’ Love it! Don’t you want more “Hygge’ in your life? That hot cocoa metaphor is easy to conjure and can be experienced in your real life easily. Especially this week in New Jersey! WWB Fav Section: What’s Love Got to Do With it? Oxytocin! That’s what. Also called the ‘cuddle hormone’  oxytocin is a natural neurohormone produced by our bodies when we experience a feeling of love, warmth and security. It requires a hug, cuddling or just general physical closeness. The amazing thing is you can release Oxytocin just by petting and cuddling with your pet!  However we achieve some cuddling, we all need more of it flowing through our bodies for our health and wellness!

Hot off the press! Last but not least, this book was just released here in the United States this week. Lykke is a Danish word for happiness and what better way to explore the concept of happiness than with the CEO of the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen (the capital of Happiness!) Here’s the thing, the really really good thing, Meik Wiking believes we all have the ability to achieve happiness. His research allows him to talk to people from all over the world and he believes WE HUMANS have a lot in common no matter where we are from. He has found the common denominator of happiness and whether we are in New Jersey, Copenhagen or India, we get happy about very similar things. Reading this book you will arm chair travel with the CEO of Happiness around the world and discover what truly makes us happy!

There are so many good tips sprinkled throughout this book, like simply start doing little random acts of kindness. I just did this today. My neighbor is away, and I brushed all the snow off her car and pulled her wipers up! I worried by the the time she got home, with the deep freeze we are facing this week, she might not be able to get into her car. I was doing my car, so why not do hers? Random Acts of Kindness starts right in your own neighborhood! Shhh don’t tell her. It was random!

WWB Fav Section: Decouple Well-Being and Wealth. Need I say more? Okay I will. Money does not buy happiness. Especially in Denmark! What seems to work well in Denmark,  is enjoying a good quality of life does not have to cost a lot of money. In fact the Danes are not alone, there are other cultures he highlights in the book who know how to be happy without being wealthy. Here is another cultural mindset example. In America we are told we will be happier if we make more money and buy more new things.  But what the author’s world wide research finds is happiness is linked with experiences not things. You will find so much wisdom in this ‘Little Book of Lykke’. A very world wise and worthwhile read sure to inspire your resolution to truly be happy in 2018!

On the eve of the Solar Eclipse, I thought it was perfect timing to announce the Summer ‘Book Wise’ pick. Tomorrow we will view an amazing ‘show in the sky’ and perhaps it will remind us how awesome this universe is, and how we are connected to everything around us. The ‘Book Wise’ Summer selection is an exploration and celebration of this very idea. The title says it all, and the illustrative content is stimulating and delightful. It’s the perfect book to take camping or to the beach, when you are relaxed, and can really contemplate with the author how phenomenal this world really is. The Solar Eclipse couldn’t have come at better time. Perhaps it’s time we all snap out of our self-absorption and unify around one important mission. Let’s save this planet and leave it for many more generations to enjoy and appreciate. The author’s introduction is wonderful and I will share an excerpt below with you. Hopefully it will inspire you to read this book and share it with friends far and wide. A great mission needs a great many friends! Enjoy the Solar Eclipse and find comfort in the fact that millions of us (of multiple ethnicities and political stripes)  across this country will be looking up at the Sun and the Moon together. The wonderful thing about hitting the bottom is there is only one way to go and that’s up! Frazzled from this stressed out world we are living in, we human beings have finally figured out that taking care of ourselves from the inside and out is the way to a happy, long and fulfilling life. Global Options in a Mobile Society: Medical Tourism is one of the fastest growing international industries and more and more countries around the world are emerging into Medical Tourism destinations, from Asian countries like India and Thailand to North Americas Cuba and to European countries like Hungary. With most of the world experiencing a healthcare crisis, patients and wellness consumers are traveling abroad to seek the best quality care and alternative options available. Health and wellness consumers are traveling worldwide and engaging in health tourism by visiting health spas, medical spas, wellness retreats and destination/day spas. In addition to the general health and wellness focus, the anti-aging trend fueled by baby boomers around the world are finding medical and health spas an appealing option in slowing down aging degenerative effects whether they be cosmetic or cellular. In the case of cosmetic surgery alone, its cost in countries such as India, Thailand or South Africa can be one tenth of how much it costs in the United States or Western Europe.

Navigating Culture CodesThe bright side of the health crisis is the global attention preventative, integrated and holistic care are receiving. Wellness Culture is now taking center stage and consumers are increasingly exploring global options and practices. The wellness phenomenon and preventative approach has been under way in recent years for the American spa market and for centuries in Europe and Asia. With diverse cultural drivers and motivators, people around the globe are now embracing wellness culture and reaching outside of their borders for treatment and therapies. Medical Spas, Health Spas and Wellness Centers exist all over the world and all operate uniquely in accordance with their focus and local culture. International associations such as IMSA, DSA and ISPA are defining guidelines comprehensively but cultural codes and standards still vary. The very differences in cultural standards may very well be the marketing appeal of medical tourism and the destination spa experience. Having access to complimentary treatments and modalities that may not be available to you at home or your country is one of the benefits of traveling across international borders.

A Healing Sense of Place and Milieu: In Europe (where the spa experience originated) you can find Medical Spas run by physicians and integrative practitioners who may combine holistic and alternative therapies to address everything from chronic health conditions to anti-aging prevention. The essential framework of the European spa industry is mainly based on the curative use of natural resources and healthy climate with contribution from medical and therapeutic care. Budapest already renowned as the “City of Spas” presents Medical Spas offering the healing benefits of mineral hot springs treating chronic musculoskeletal problems. Often the spa physicians have a specialty in Rheumatology or Internal Medicine as well as Physiotherapy (series of cures using electrotherapy, ultrasound therapy light therapy etc), Homeopathy (a system of therapeutics using natural substances such as plants, herbs and minerals), or Botanical medicine. You will also find treatments such as Climatherapy (focus on air purity for treatment of respiratory conditions), Balintherapy (a general term for water based treatments treating circulatory, musculoskeletal and immune sensitive illnesses) and Crenotherapy (treatment carried out with mineral water, mud or vapor). The attention to place and natural healing properties are paramount to the European wellness culture.

Bon Voyage Takes on New Meaning: Voltaire, the French philosopher and writer of the Enlightenment wrote “The art of medicine consists of amusing the patient while nature cures the disease”. This philosophy is still relevant today and is the essence of a wellness inspired vacation. Medical and Health tourism is no longer a novelty and is quickly becoming a lucrative global trend. As wellness culture spreads around the world, expect to discover a cultural cocktail of treatments and services. Crossing borders allows the wellness consumer to enjoy the affordable cost of various healing options that may be much higher priced in their own home and region. The opportunity to experience a new culture in an exotic locale while healing, recuperating or revitalizing is a seductive proposition many wellness consumers will explore in the coming years. Back in 2008 I was producing a business conference and forum for the spa and wellness industry in California. Here were some of the top trends and topics I thought were important to explore to keep “purveyors” of beauty, health and wellness services on the cutting edge and in tune with the wellness consumer ( that would be you and me).

Despite the arguments going on in politics and the polarization of ethnic groups designed by lobbyist with special interests, America is a diverse multicultural country and the fusion of cultures and ideals are happening all around us everyday. There is no better example of “cultural cocktailing” than watching wellness culture.  So what is a cultural cocktail? Asian Beauty Products Bring New Glow to the

U.S. market

During the summer of 2012, when friends Alicia Yoon and Cindy Kim were both working in Seoul, South Korea, they would both carry tons of Japanese and Korean beauty products on trips back home to the United States to give to family and friends.

“Products from Korea and Japan tend to be ‘better,’” says Kim, “probably because they are focused on using herbs, botanicals and natural ingredients, as opposed to a lot of chemicals.”

Soon, the two businesswomen realized interest wasn’t just limited to their circle but included the average American consumer. In January, they launched Peach and Lily, featuring top beauty products from Korea and Japan, joining other Asian beauty sites including SoKoGlam, which also opened early in 2013, and MomoMango.com. Both of the latter sites focus on Korean beauty products.

The demand for Asian products in the $60 billion U.S. beauty industry has been growing –- especially since 2011, when BB cream exploded on the scene. (BB stands for blemish balm.) This alternative foundation, which contains skin-benefiting nutrients, became popular in Korea five years ago, where it makes up 13 percent of the cosmetics market. After being introduced in the United States, it inspired a new beauty product category, with brands like Clinique, Estée Lauder and Chanel creating their own versions of the tinted moisturizer. The success piqued further interest in Korean products, as people in the industry wondered why BB cream hadn’t come to the United States sooner.

“A lot of Asian women view their skin as a prized possession. It’s all about respecting your skin and using the best ingredients for your skin. As a result of that heritage and culture, Asian beauty consumers are some of the most savvy in the world,” Kim says. “What happens is all the money they spend on these beauty products, which is about seven times more than the average American woman, gets dumped back into R&D in Japan and Korea. And that’s why even Marie Claire is quoted as saying that Korea is 10 years ahead in skincare innovation.”

For instance, Yoon says two products that are huge in Korea but just making their way to the United States are CC cream, the next generation of BB cream (CC stands for color correcting or color control); and the cushion compact, “which is a foundation, but the applicator is antibacterial and very rubbery and gives you a glowy look while hydrating your skin and concealing blemishes. That’s a huge product category in Korea right now that you don’t see in the U.S.”

The U.S. consumer demand for Asian skincare reflects the convergence of two other big trends: the rise of natural, organic skincare, and the appeal of boutique brands over department store lines.

That’s why the consumer base for these sites isn’t limited to people of Asian descent. SoKoGlam estimates 80 percent of its clients are not Asian; likewise, Kim says more than half of Peach and Lily’s customers aren’t. She says the site’s customers — who hail from both bigger cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, as well as smaller states like Arkansas, Utah and Minnesota — don’t see the products as being made for “Asian skin” so much as they are made for certain skin types.

The interest in natural beauty products is an extension of the rise of companies like Whole Foods, says Yoon. “Should you have parabens in your products or not? Should you have mineral oil? Those conversations, about what people don’t want in their products, took place in Korea and Japan long before the conversations here,” she says. “That’s a really big trend in skincare now, where it’s not just about putting something on your skin and trying to get overnight results. It’s about taking care of your skin in a full, holistic-wellbeing kind of way. And that’s something that Korea, Japan and Asia have been thinking about for a long time.”
